Our take on Overboss
The focus on drafting and arranging a map leaves less room for other kinds of play, such as a developing narrative or a broader set of activities. This concentrated structure gives placement and scoring combinations the central role, which may feel restrictive to players seeking a wider scope.
What is Overboss?
Overboss is a retro-style board game in which players take the roles of villains, construct dungeon maps, and gather monsters.
During each round, a player selects one landscape tile and its token group from the Market, placing the tile in an unoccupied map position. Landscapes use distinct scoring rules: Swamps gain Power beside coasts or other Swamps, Graveyards award a bonus to the player with the largest collection, and Forests become worth more as their number grows. Monster and Miniboss tokens are placed on vacant terrain.
A matching icon grants a monster an extra point, while groups containing at least two monsters earn increased bonuses. Portals allow Monsters and Minibosses to change positions as the map develops, and Crystals multiply Power. The player whose total score is highest when the map is complete becomes the OVERBOSS.
How Overboss plays
- 01Terrain scoring
- Swamps, Graveyards, and Forests each have a different scoring rule.
- 02Monster bonuses
- Matching a monster to an icon earns a bonus point, while lines of two or more monsters receive larger bonuses.
- 03Portal movement
- Portals let players move Monsters and Minibosses as their maps fill.
- 04Crystal multipliers
- Collecting Crystals multiplies power.
