How to choose a racing game
Racing games range from realistic driving simulators with tyre wear and telemetry to arcade racers built around drifting, boosts and spectacular crashes. There are also kart racers, off-road and rally games, motorbike sims and futuristic anti-gravity racers.
Simulators are best with a wheel or a good controller and reward practice on the same tracks. Arcade racers are friendlier with a keyboard or gamepad and usually have campaigns or quick races that fit a short evening. Some racers are mainly online, with ranked lobbies and seasonal events.
Use the fit notes to check the handling style and whether the game expects a wheel, a controller or online play. Those three things decide most racing purchases.
Car lists and track counts matter less than you might think. A racer with a few well-made tracks and good handling usually lasts longer than one with hundreds of cars and shallow driving. Check whether there is a career mode, local split-screen or only online racing, depending on how you like to play. Licensed franchises often have yearly editions, so the release date and the state of the online community are worth a look too.
