How to choose an RPG
Role-playing games are about growing a character or a party: levelling up, choosing skills, finding gear and making decisions that change the story. The genre includes classic party RPGs, action RPGs, turn-based JRPGs, tactical RPGs, dungeon crawlers and open-world adventures.
RPGs differ most in how they fight and how long they last. Action RPGs play in real time; turn-based and tactical RPGs let you plan. Some campaigns run for 80 hours or more, while roguelike RPGs are built around short, repeatable runs.
Check the fit notes for playtime, combat style and how much reading the game expects. Our “Skip it if you…” lists flag grinding, inventory management and slow starts, the most common reasons an RPG gets left unfinished.
Party RPGs ask you to manage several characters and their equipment, while action RPGs usually focus on one hero and moment-to-moment combat. Story-heavy RPGs often have branching dialogue and multiple endings, which adds replay value if you enjoy seeing how choices change the outcome. If you are new to the genre, a shorter RPG with a clear main quest is a gentler start than a sprawling open world.
