How to choose a strategy game
Strategy games ask you to think ahead: manage resources, read an opponent and live with the consequences of your choices. The genre ranges from fast real-time strategy and tower defence to slow turn-based tactics, city builders and grand strategy campaigns that can run for dozens of hours.
The biggest difference between strategy games is tempo. Real-time games test multitasking and speed; turn-based games give you time to plan every move. Grand strategy and 4X games (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) layer many systems at once and often have steep learning curves, while puzzle-like tactics games keep the rules small and the decisions sharp.
New to the genre? Look for games with a tutorial campaign, a pause button and a short first scenario. The “Skip it if you…” notes on each page flag games that lean on spreadsheets, long campaigns or competitive multiplayer, which are the usual reasons strategy games get refunded.
