Our take on Xenonauts
Missions emerge from the invasion’s rules: a UFO’s crash location, the time of an attack, and even a strike on the base can shape the next battle.
What is Xenonauts?
Xenonauts is a strategy game set on a Cold War-era Earth under alien attack.
Command a multinational military organisation, send small squads of persistent soldiers into turn-based ground battles, and recover alien technology. Between missions, direct planetary defence by sending customisable interceptors against UFOs, balancing the needs of funding nations with spending on equipment, scientists, or wider coverage. Research captured artefacts to uncover information about the invaders and develop new equipment, aircraft, and vehicles.
Missions are generated by the invasion’s rules rather than scripted sequences: where a UFO goes down, the time of an attack, or a strike on a base can shape the resulting battle. Soldiers gain experience and ranks across missions, but can die from a single bad move.
How Xenonauts plays
- 01Persistent Soldiers
- Troops carry their experience and ranks between missions, while battlefield losses can be permanent.
- 02Planetary Defence
- Customisable interceptors engage UFOs, while spending decisions balance military needs against funding nations’ expectations.
- 03Generated Missions
- Battle conditions depend on events such as a UFO’s crash location or the time of an attack, rather than scripted mission sequences.
- 04Research Projects
- Captured artefacts lead to projects that reveal information about the invaders and unlock equipment, aircraft, and vehicles.
