How to choose an action game
Action is the broadest genre on Steam, and the label covers games that have little in common beyond asking for quick hands. Shooters, character brawlers, platformers, roguelites, bullet hells and stealth games all live here, and each asks for a different kind of skill: aim, timing, memorisation or patience.
Before you buy, decide what kind of pressure you enjoy. Roguelites restart you often and reward learning through failure; linear campaigns let you see an ending without mastering every system. Soulslike games are built around difficult, pattern-based fights, while arena and score-attack games are made for short, repeatable runs.
If you are new to the genre, look for games whose “Play it if you…” list mentions adjustable difficulty, checkpoints or short sessions, and read the “Skip it if you…” list for words like punishing, precise or twitchy. Those are the clearest signs of whether a game will feel exciting or exhausting.
