How to choose a simulation game

Simulation games let you run, build or operate something: a farm, a city, a hospital, a train network, a plane or a business. Some aim for realism and detail; others are relaxed “life sims” about routines, decorating and small goals.

Two questions narrow the choice quickly. First, do you want to manage a system from above (management and tycoon games) or do a job hands-on (driving, flying, repairing)? Second, do you want a goal to work towards, or an open sandbox with no fail state?

Simulations often get more complex the longer you play. The “Skip it if you…” notes call out repetitive tasks, deep menus or long learning curves, which are the usual reasons players bounce off the genre, while “Play it if you…” points you to games that suit short, calm sessions.

Many simulators also have large communities making mods, maps and custom scenarios, which can keep a game going for years. If a game is in early access, the fit notes will say so; check how often it is updated before buying.
