Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a compact strategy experience may find the expanded epic game too focused on late-game management.

- Players looking for a standalone game rather than an expansion to Civilization IV
Our take on Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
The expansion adds many interconnected systems, but that breadth increases the amount of late-game management. Advanced starts provide a shorter route to new content, while the full epic structure still requires sustained attention across a longer campaign.
What is Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword?
Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword expands the turn-based empire-building game with content centered on periods after gunpowder.
It adds 11 scenarios, 10 civilizations, new leaders, five wonders, new units, buildings, and technologies. New systems include corporations, earlier espionage, random events, expanded diplomacy, and an Apostolic Palace that enables an earlier diplomatic victory. The expansion also extends the space victory requirements and adds advanced starts, allowing an empire to begin later in the game with selected components. The epic game receives particular attention in its later stages, while improved artificial intelligence uses fewer handicap bonuses and pursues a wider range of victory strategies.
