Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want combat to be the whole experience may hit a wall when they must manage crew duties, morale and supplies between missions.
- Players who prefer a fixed squad may not enjoy developing individual soldiers through skills, equipment and medals.
- Players looking for turn-based combat may not fit the real-time mission structure.
- Players seeking a short, standalone battle may not want the ongoing journey and train-management campaign.
Our take on Last Train Home
The likely sticking point is the transition from real-time missions to the train’s upkeep loop. Players who want to move from one battle straight to the next may bounce when they must also manage supplies, morale, wounded soldiers and maintenance during the journey.
What is Last Train Home?
Guide Czechoslovak soldiers across Siberia as they attempt to return home after the Great War, traveling aboard an armored train during the Russian Civil War.
The journey combines resource and morale management with real-time combat missions, where squads tackle varied objectives using specialist skills and chosen tactics. Soldiers can gain levels, skills, equipment and medals, while crew members take on train duties such as crafting items, treating wounded soldiers and restoring morale. Supplies can be stockpiled or traded, and train carriages and the locomotive can be upgraded and maintained. The route also brings opportunities to form alliances and respond to crises. The story draws on the historical experiences of the Czechoslovak Legion.
