Is Khaligrad worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want turn-based squad combat set in a wartime city
- Players interested in campaigns with two opposing sides and different resource pressures
- Tactical players who want between-mission decisions about wounded troops, supplies, and equipment
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a light or forgiving campaign may find the scarce supplies, harsh winter, and severe consequences demanding
- Players looking for non-combat missions may find the structure narrow because every mission involves fighting
- Players wanting a broad empire-building game may find the focus on battalions, missions, and war management too limited
Our take on Khaligrad
The store presentation foregrounds frontline combat, but the campaign also requires recurring care for wounded soldiers, food, heat, and equipment. That between-mission burden is central to play, while the two sides differ through supply, support, army size, and equipment constraints.
What is Khaligrad?
Khaligrad is a strategy game set in 1442, during a war between the Vollcross Empire and Kazanov Union.
Two campaigns let players command either side: the Empire has limited supplies and distant support, while the Union has larger armies but inferior equipment. Missions involve securing positions, defending ammunition, or eliminating opposing forces with squads whose quality and morale vary. Battles use turn-based tactics, ambushes, and terrain, including urban combat. Between missions, officers care for wounded soldiers, feed and heat troops, and manage equipment while resources become scarce and winter worsens. Campaign successes and failures influence later missions and story directions. The officer may become a hero who repeatedly repels the enemy or face a firing squad for incompetence.
How Khaligrad plays
- 01Two Campaign Sides

- 03Squad Management
- Units differ in soldier quality and morale, while between missions require care for wounded troops, food, heat, and equipment.
- 04Changing Campaign Paths
- Successes and failures influence subsequent assignments and can lead to different outcomes for the officer.
Khaligrad compared to similar games
Khaligrad focuses on two opposing military campaigns with turn-based urban squad battles and between-mission management of wounded troops, food, heat, and equipment. Xenonauts also uses small persistent squads in turn-based combat, but places them in a Cold War-era defense against aliens and includes recovering extraterrestrial technology.
