Our take on Stirring Abyss
The description gives substantial space to the crew's survival and the story, but the game also has an Endless Mode focused on repeated battles against increasingly strong enemies. That mode shifts the emphasis from rescuing crewmembers and repairing the submarine to squad upgrades and enemy powers.
What is Stirring Abyss?
Stirring Abyss is a tactical squad game with RPG elements, set after the USS Salem sinks during a secret research mission in the early Cold War.
The surviving crew is trapped among the ruins of an ancient civilization. Story Mode follows efforts to find missing crewmembers and repair the submarine, with choices affecting the crew and the wider story. Character skills and traits shape combat and story events, while mutations can change crew members. Exhaustion and insanity episodes also affect the crew.
Missions involve exploring dark waters, scouting for threats, and salvaging resources. Salvage can be used for weapons, armor, supplies, or repairs and upgrades to the Salem. Endless Mode shifts to a roguelike battle against enemies that grow stronger, with players choosing both squad improvements and powers for their opponents.
