We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Co-op horror players who want to crew a submarine with up to three other people
- Solo players who want to scavenge underwater facilities and manage submarine systems
- Players who enjoy vehicle combat and resource gathering in an alien setting
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fast-paced action game rather than a survival-focused journey between outposts

- Players who do not want to manage scarce supplies and cargo space
Our take on Darkwater
The pitch emphasizes cooperative survival, but the game also supports solo play. Its loop combines submarine travel and vessel combat with on-foot scavenging, so it is not solely a crewed-ship experience.
What is Darkwater?
Darkwater supports solo play and crews of up to four.
Players control a submarine beneath the ice-covered sea of an alien world, moving between outposts to obtain fuel and supplies. They can disembark to search abandoned underwater sites, gather materials, and battle infected divers, angler fish, and alien crabs. Submarine operations cover navigation, armaments, and sonar, while upgrades add deck space and specialized rooms. Rival vessels create naval encounters involving torpedoes, harpoons, mines, depth charges, and manned-torpedo boarding. The crew must reserve capacity for fuel canisters while piecing together evidence of a wider mystery.
How Darkwater plays
- 01Submarine upgrades
- Players can expand the vessel's deck and add rooms that offer options such as hacking and stealth.
- 02Submarine combat
- Weapons include torpedoes, harpoons, decoy mines, and depth charges, with boarding available through a manned torpedo.
- 03On-foot scavenging
- Players can explore deteriorating underwater facilities and take supplies back to the submarine.
- 04Crew resource management
- The team needs enough cargo space to bring fuel canisters aboard.
