- Card-game fans who want building choices tied to a resource economy
- Roguelite players who prefer randomized expeditions and region-specific challenges
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want to undo construction may hit a wall when they learn that every building is permanent.
- Players who prefer open-ended city layouts may find the upward-only building rule restrictive.
- Players seeking direct military combat may find the rebuilding focus does not match that preference.
Our take on Vertical Kingdom
The clearest point of friction is a misplaced building: construction is permanent, and cities can grow only upward. Players who rely on undoing choices or reshaping a town later may hit that limit early, especially when space and resources are already constrained.
What is Vertical Kingdom?
Vertical Kingdom is a card-based city-building roguelite set after a generation-long war has left an empire in ruins.
As the Great Architect, players travel on randomized expeditions and establish cities in different regions. Each turn, they choose five decks and play cards to build upward, with every building remaining permanent. Food, water, bricks, wood, stone, and metal are needed to grow cities and play additional cards. Regional challenges include difficult terrain, scarce resources, and limited building space. Homes and workshops belonging to imperial citizens can be combined with building choices to produce taxes and resources and maintain loyalty. The aim is to rebuild the empire one region and city at a time, while facing an evil among the ruins.
