Our take on City Defense Z
Rather than treating defense as a single setup followed by a battle, the game splits preparation and combat across a repeating day-and-night cycle. Defeats also feed into later runs through persistent research upgrades.
What is City Defense Z?
City Defense Z pairs daytime base-building with nighttime defense against an expanding zombie threat.
During the day, gather and trade resources, place or merge buildings, recruit soldiers, select NPCs for expeditions, and position troops. Buildings produce construction resources and ammunition, train soldiers, generate research points, or raise the population limit. At night, defenses face attacks, with airstrikes and boosters available to support them. A failed run earns research points for permanent upgrades, which can be chosen from 13 research trees containing 150+ upgrades. The game also includes a leaderboard and tracks how many days a city can withstand the threat.
How City Defense Z plays
- 01Persistent Research
- Research points earned during runs can be spent on upgrades that remain available in later attempts.
- 02Grid-Based Merging
- Careful placement causes soldiers and buildings to combine automatically.
- 03Day-Night Cycle
- Daytime is for gathering and preparing, while nighttime puts the base defenses to work.
