Our take on Root
Its defining structure is asymmetry: each woodland faction follows a distinct economy, action system, and route to victory.
What is Root?
Root is a digital adaptation of a woodland board game for 2 to 4 players.
Each faction uses a different approach to the struggle for control: the Marquise de Cat builds an industrial network and manages Wood, the Eyrie capture territory while following changing decrees, and the Woodland Alliance spreads sympathy before organizing rebellions. The Vagabond explores clearings and forests, gathers items, trades with factions, completes quests, and manages relationships. Victory points come from faction-specific actions such as buildings, roosts, sympathy tokens, faction relationships, and quests. The game supports cross-platform digital play and presents a contest among the Cats, Eyrie, Woodland Alliance, and Vagabond.
How Root plays
- 01Four Faction Roles
- The Cats, Eyrie, Woodland Alliance, and Vagabond each pursue victory through different rules and objectives.
- 02Faction-Specific Scoring
- Victory points are awarded for structures, territory, sympathy, relationships, hostile warriors, or completed quests depending on the faction.
- 03Woodland Exploration
- The Vagabond searches clearings, dense woods, and ruins while expanding a collection of items.
- 04Cross-Platform Play
- The digital adaptation supports multiplayer across platforms for 2 to 4 players.
