We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Detective-game fans who want to play the murderer rather than identify an unknown culprit
- Narrative-game players who enjoy replaying short scenarios to uncover secrets
- Players who prefer timed social manipulation over combat-focused gameplay
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a long uninterrupted campaign may hit the 30–45-minute length of a single play-through
- Players who dislike constantly advancing deadlines may hit a wall with the eight-hour time limit
- Players looking for combat systems may not find the focus on dialogue, deception, and investigation suitable
Our take on Overboard!
Players who expect one complete run to reveal everything may bounce off when a 30–45-minute play-through ends with secrets still undiscovered. The point of friction is the repeat-run structure: reaching the ideal ending takes considerably longer than a single attempt.
What is Overboard!?
Overboard!
is a detective adventure set in July 1935 aboard the SS Hook, eight hours from New York. The player has committed a murder and must escape justice by managing clues, evidence, suspects, accusations, secrets, and lies. Characters act independently, remember what they see and hear, and respond to the player’s actions. During the eight-hour time limit, the player can blackmail, befriend, betray, deceive, steal, drug a witness, gather information, or pursue other choices. Each play-through lasts about 30–45 minutes. Replaying reveals more secrets and allows different approaches to the crime, while achieving the ideal ending takes considerably longer. The narrative changes around the player’s decisions, relationships, and interactions with people aboard the ship.
How Overboard! plays

- 04Short Repeatable Runs
- A single play-through lasts about 30–45 minutes, while repeated attempts reveal more secrets and support work toward the ideal ending.
