Is NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Shmup fans who want turn-based combat instead of real-time firing
- Strategy players who prefer short battles over long waiting periods
- Roguelike fans who enjoy changing combat boards and ship builds
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking continuous real-time shmup action may bounce off the turn-based battle system.
- Those wanting a fixed set of battlefields may dislike the procedurally generated boards and changing combat situations.
- Players looking for a large-scale military strategy game may find the focus on individual ships too narrow.
Our take on NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics
The bounce point arrives when a shmup player expects reflex-driven action: every battle pauses for movement and planning instead. Players who also dislike procedural layouts may hit a second wall, since each jump creates a new combat board rather than following fixed stages.
What is NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics?
NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics combines shoot ’em up combat with turn-based planning.
Players jump across procedurally generated combat boards, pursue Dragons carrying the Galaxy’s Elixir supply, and face groups of enemies in fast-moving turns. Seven playable ships draw on classic weapons, including Ballista, Dagger, Hammer, Staff, Sword, Shield, and a secret ship. Weapons and accessories can be equipped and upgraded to alter combat situations. The game includes Reputation Bets, three difficulty settings, and sectors connected through successive jumps. Its influences include classic shmups and bullet hells, tactical games such as Final Fantasy Tactics, and roguelikes including FTL and Crypt of the NecroDancer. A manual is available inside the game.

NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics compared to similar games
Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based combat and roguelike progression, but centers on positioning, attack tiles, combos, skills, and deck building before facing the Shogun. NEXT JUMP instead applies turn-based tactics to shoot ’em up battles, with procedurally generated boards, seven ships, and equipment upgrades. The other listed alternatives do not present the same combination of space-shooter combat and ship-focused play.
