Our take on Insurmountable
Permanent death combines with procedurally generated mountains, making route planning temporary: each attempt demands new choices about terrain, equipment, vital values, and unpredictable events.
What is Insurmountable?
Insurmountable is an adventure roguelike about climbing three increasingly dangerous mountains.
Each ascent uses a procedurally generated environment, with changing weather, day and night, animals, abysses, ruins, caves, crates, and unpredictable events. Players choose one of three characters, each with different abilities and backgrounds, then manage equipment, statistics, and route choices while trying to keep the climber alive. A skill system lets players shape the climber’s strengths over time. Decisions influence later events, while permanent death means a failed climb ends the attempt. The three mountains also contain separate mysterious stories involving human and non-human characters.
How Insurmountable plays
- 01Procedural mountain routes
- Each climb creates a different environment, so routes cannot be learned as fixed paths.
- 02Changing survival conditions
- Weather shifts and the day-night cycle affect the mountain during an ascent.
- 03Event-driven decisions
- Random encounters can lead to different outcomes depending on the choices made.
- 04Climber progression
- A skill system and found equipment let the selected character develop during play.
- 05Three playable characters
- The available climbers have distinct abilities and background stories.
- 06Permanent death
- A failed attempt does not provide a second try on the same climb.
Insurmountable compared to similar games
Insurmountable focuses on solo mountain ascents across procedurally generated terrain, with route planning, equipment management, and survival values shaping each attempt. Quasimorph instead centers on corporate contracts, extraction, and a cyberpunk cosmic-horror setting, with successful missions strengthening the player’s PMC.
