Our take on Syndrome VR
The focus on enclosed survival horror gives up campaign access in VR: virtual-reality play is limited to an endless mode against enemy hordes. Scarce ammunition also shifts encounters away from sustained firefights and toward hiding, evasion, and selective weapon use.
What is Syndrome VR?
Syndrome is a science-fiction survival horror game set aboard the Valkenburg, an exploration and science ship drifting after its crew is killed.
Awakening from cryosleep, the player searches the vessel for answers while dealing with enemies that respond to sound and investigate disturbances. Weapons can be found aboard the ship, but ammunition is limited, making stealth and evasion important parts of survival. Exploration reveals locations and discoveries throughout the vessel, while the story investigates what happened to the crew. The game also includes a separate survival mode in full VR, where the player faces continuous enemy hordes. The single-player campaign is not playable in VR.
How Syndrome VR plays
- 01Sound-reactive enemies
- Hostile creatures investigate noises and other disruptions during exploration.
- 02Limited ammunition
- Weapons are available on the ship, but their ammunition supply restricts prolonged firefights.
- 03Ship exploration
- The Valkenburg contains areas to investigate and discoveries connected to the crew's fate.
- 04Separate VR survival
- Full VR provides an endless mode centered on facing successive enemy hordes rather than the campaign.
