Our take on Spirits of Xanadu
Rather than guiding exploration with maps and objective markers, the game leaves the ship's sabotage and mission details to be pieced together through investigation. Its optional peaceful mode also separates story and puzzle discovery from the usual requirement to fight hostile robots.
What is Spirits of Xanadu?
Set on a neglected research vessel in an alternate 1980s, Spirits of Xanadu follows a solitary operative sent to restore the ship and guide it back to Earth after its crew has been silent for months.
Clues emerge through spoken audio recordings, written files, and electronic correspondence. The ship supports hands-on investigation: players can inspect or operate drawers, computers, and other objects while solving puzzles and facing armed security machines in first-person encounters. The assignment provides little guidance, with no map or objective indicators; it starts with a flashlight and a transmission from Earth.
A nonviolent setting turns the robots passive for exploration and puzzle-solving. The outcome depends on a choice among three possible conclusions that decide what becomes of the Xanadu.
How Spirits of Xanadu plays
- 01Crew investigation
- Voiced recordings, documents, and emails provide information about the missing crew and events aboard the ship.
- 02Three possible endings
- The final outcome depends on a decision made after investigating the Xanadu.
- 03Unmarked exploration
- The ship has no map or objective indicators, leaving its sabotaged systems and primary mission to be worked out during exploration.
- 04Robot combat
- Hostile security robots can be confronted with first-person shooter weapons.
- 05Peaceful mode
- An alternate difficulty setting makes the robots passive for exploration, story discovery, and puzzle solving.
