StrategyIs Silent Shark worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Naval-history fans who want manual targeting and period-inspired instruments
- Strategy players who prefer chart-based planning over direct-action combat
- Simulation players seeking long patrols with fuel, torpedo, and air management
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking fast, action-led submarine combat may find the plotting and preparation slow-paced.
- Players wanting broad empire management or large-scale battlefield control may find the command scope narrow.
- Players looking for frequent variety between patrols may find repeated hunting, firing, and evasion routines demanding.
Our take on Silent Shark
Submarine simulations often center on navigation and combat from a broad interface, but this one makes estimation and preparation the main activity. Attacks depend on assembling incomplete information through instruments, chart work, and observation rather than relying on direct targeting or rapid commands.
What is Silent Shark?
Silent Shark is a tactical WWII submarine simulation set in the Pacific Theater.
Operations take place on a tactical chart, where contacts are tracked by hydrophone, examined through a zooming periscope, and measured with a stadimeter. Players estimate range and build firing solutions with a Torpedo Data Computer, then manage tube flooding, gyro angles, spreads, and salvos. Sea conditions, weather, visibility, thermal layers, depth, and speed affect detection and stealth. The campaign includes patrol zones, radio intelligence, historical events, resource management, changing bases, aircraft threats, persistent ship encounters, and six submarines unlocked through reputation. Destroyer escorts respond to predicted locations using sonar and hydrophone readings. Tutorials, standalone scenarios, a scenario editor, and a cribbage mini-game are also included.
How Silent Shark plays
- 01Manual Target Analysis
- Hydrophone readings, periscope views, ship identification, and stadimeter measurements supply the information used to estimate range and movement.
- 02Torpedo Fire Control
- The TDC uses angle-on-bow, target speed, bearing, and distance to calculate torpedo attacks.
- 03Environmental Stealth
- Visibility, weather, sea state, time of day, and thermal layers influence detection and concealment.
- 04Pacific Campaign
- A patrol-based campaign includes mission zones, radio updates, base relocation, resource management, and changing enemy activity.
- 05Persistent Ship Encounters
- Historically named enemy vessels remain sunk after destruction during a patrol.
- 06Scenario Creation
- Tutorials, standalone missions, and an editor provide multiple ways to configure submarine operations.
