Our take on The Great Escape
The escape premise receives strong emphasis, but progress is also governed by repeated daily obligations, restricted zones, item loss, and morale depletion. The result is a schedule-driven stealth game in which preparation and timing occupy much of the experience.
What is The Great Escape?
The Great Escape is an isometric action-adventure game set in the Heldentod prisoner-of-war camp in 1942.
The player controls a captured soldier seeking to rejoin the Allied Armies through routes such as back doors, damaged fences, and underground tunnels. Escape planning takes place around a strict daily schedule that includes two roll calls, one meal, exercise, and staying in bed at night. Guards patrol set routes and watch for movement, while entering restricted areas can lead to solitary confinement. Items including keys, uniforms, and flashlights support progress, but suspicious prisoners can lose everything they are carrying. Morale falls when the protagonist is caught and ends the escape attempt when it reaches zero. The game offers multiple escape routes and solutions.
How The Great Escape plays
- 01Multiple Escape Routes
- Possible paths include rear entrances, breaches in fences, and underground passages.
- 02Scheduled Camp Routine
- The prisoner must attend two daily roll calls, one meal, exercise, and remain in bed at night.
- 03Guard Patrols
- Soldiers follow set routes and use lines of sight that can be studied and avoided.
- 04Escape Equipment
- Keys, disguises, lights, and other objects provide access or support movement through the camp.
- 05Morale Consequences
- Detection lowers morale, and reaching zero breaks the prisoner’s will to escape.
