We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players who want to operate submarine sensors and weapons rather than control surface fleets
- Simulation fans interested in sonar analysis and electronic warfare rather than arcade naval combat
- Players seeking structured campaign missions and scenario creation rather than an open-ended strategy campaign

Our take on Modern Naval Warfare
The game puts information gathering at the center of naval combat. Sonar analysis, navigation, crew stations, electronic warfare, and damage control take the place of simplified unit commands, making submarine operations rather than fleet-wide strategy its focus.
What is Modern Naval Warfare?
Modern Naval Warfare places players inside Virginia-class nuclear submarines to operate sensors, weapons, navigation systems, and crew stations.
The simulation models sonar propagation, signal analysis, hydrodynamics, flooding, damage, electronic warfare, weather, waves, and civilian traffic. Stations include piloting, sonar, fire control, ESM, and radar, while the arsenal includes torpedoes, missiles, mines, decoys, chaff, and flares. An 18-mission campaign set in the South China Sea covers anti-submarine warfare, convoy hunts, special-forces insertion, and espionage. Three training missions introduce the systems, and a quick mission editor allows players to create challenges.
How Modern Naval Warfare plays
- 01Submarine Crew Stations
- Clickable control stations cover piloting, sonar, fire control, ESM, and radar operations.
- 02Acoustic Modeling
- The simulation calculates sound propagation, flow noise, transients, and component sounds in real time.
- 03Sonar Analysis
- Sonar operators can use FFT analysis for narrowband, LOFAR, and DEMON applications.
- 04Damage Modeling
- Hydrodynamic calculations, underwater pressure effects, flooding, and permeability-based damage affect vessels.
- 05Weapons And Countermeasures
- The arsenal includes torpedoes, multi-stage missiles, mines, noisemakers, sonar decoys, chaff, and flares.
- 06Campaign Missions
- The South China Sea campaign contains 18 missions covering several types of naval operations.
- 07Training And Editor
- Three training missions introduce the systems, and a quick mission editor supports custom challenges.
