Our take on Shields of Loyalty
Its layered synergy system trades immediate simplicity for positional planning: unit types, commander choice, terrain, weather, and adjacent abilities all affect the available tactics. Players who want to act without tracking several interacting conditions may find the design demanding.
What is Shields of Loyalty?
Shields of Loyalty is a dark fantasy, turn-based strategy game focused on cooperation between unit types.
Choose from three factions and three commanders, each shaping which army combinations and special abilities become available. Battles take place on hex-grid maps where forests, ridges, chokepoints, hazards, and changing weather affect movement and formations. Cavalry, infantry, spellcasters, heroes, and other units can trigger effects based on their positions and neighboring troops. Campaign choices open some routes while closing others, changing the battles, army composition, and synergies found in each playthrough. Units can be trained, while artifacts grant specialized abilities. The campaign spans three biomes and includes non-respawning hero units whose auras add further combinations.
How Shields of Loyalty plays
- 01Commander Factions
- Three commanders specialize in cavalry, infantry and flight units, or magical amplification, shaping available army combinations.
- 02Hex-Grid Terrain
- Forests, ridges, chokepoints, swamps, traps, and molten hazards change movement and the formations available during battles.
- 03Branching Campaigns
- Campaign decisions open some battles and close others, producing different armies and ability combinations across playthroughs.
- 04Dynamic Weather Events
- Lightning, meteors, and storms can strike either side during a battle, requiring changes to the current formation.
- 05Unique Hero Units
- Three hidden heroes appear once each and provide auras that enable combinations unavailable elsewhere.
