Our take on Painkiller
Its defining structure is fast movement through Purgatory while fighting demon hordes, with jumps, dashes, and hooks shaping traversal as much as combat.
What is Painkiller?
Painkiller is an action game set in Purgatory, where Champions confront the fallen angel Azazel and his demonic armies.
Players move through gothic environments using jumps, dashes, hooks, and infernal weapons against groups of demons and three monstrous Nephilim. Co-op supports up to three players, with offline play available. Four characters—Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch—offer different perks affecting energy, health, power, and damage. Tarot cards can improve abilities and be combined between players. Beyond the main campaign, Rogue Angel Mode places teams in handcrafted, randomized arenas focused on survival.
How Painkiller plays
- 01Three-player co-op
- Teams can include as many as three players and combine Tarot card effects during combat.
- 02Offline support
- The game can be played without an online connection.
- 03Four playable characters
- Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch each provide perks tied to energy, health, power, or damage.
- 04Rogue Angel Mode
- This additional mode uses handcrafted randomized arenas for team-based survival fights.
- 05Movement-focused combat
- Players cross environments with jumping, dashing, and hook-based traversal while fighting enemies.
Painkiller compared to similar games
Abyssus also centers on multiplayer shooting and roguelite survival, but it uses hand-crafted levels, brine-powered weapons, and weapon refitting with ancient technologies. Painkiller instead combines a campaign setting with gothic environments, four character choices, Tarot card combinations, and randomized survival arenas.
