Our take on Numina
Players who want combat without turn-based rounds may hit a wall once battles begin: attacks resolve in rounds, and some require timed inputs. Those who prefer a fixed story path may also find that choices affect relationships and determine which of four endings follows.
What is Numina?
Numina is a story-driven RPG set in Alterna, where a mysterious force called Life’s Breath powers magic and technology.
Players act as a bodiless voice that only Shawn can hear, guiding him through dialogue choices as he investigates a conspiracy surrounding the Ecclesia. Choices affect Shawn’s relationships with other characters and lead to one of four endings. Battles use turn-based rounds, timed inputs for some attacks, and character-specific elemental abilities that can target enemy weaknesses. Players can solve puzzles, visit towns, take on side quests that reveal world history, and use a grappling hook to reach elevated areas containing gear, spell scrolls, or other items. The story was released in two parts, with Part II available as DLC.
How Numina plays
- 01Four Story Endings
- Decisions influence the plot’s conclusion as well as Shawn’s connections with the people he meets.
- 02Relationship-Based Combos
- Strong bonds with party members can grant access to special combination attacks.
- 03Timed Battle Inputs
- Some attacks call for timed button presses, while elemental abilities can exploit enemy vulnerabilities.
- 04Grappling Hook Exploration
- The hook provides access to elevated areas where players can find equipment, spell scrolls, and rare items.
- 05Lore-Focused Side Quests
- Many optional quests add background about Alterna and its history.
