Our take on Lost Patrol
The bounce point comes when the military-map journey changes format. Players comfortable with route planning may hit a wall at the sudden shift into arcade shooting, hand-to-hand combat, or another encounter type.
What is Lost Patrol?
Lost Patrol follows seven survivors of a helicopter crash in Vietnam as they try to reach their lines.
The journey covers 57 miles through jungles and paddy fields containing booby traps and enemy soldiers. Players guide the squad across a military map, then face changing encounters that include arcade shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and other scenes. Squad morale is another concern: one member may be a psychological threat, and identifying that person becomes part of the trek. Released in 1990, the game combines map-based strategy, adventure, arcade action, and other genres rather than using one consistent format throughout.
How Lost Patrol plays
- 01Seven-Person Squad
- The group consists of helicopter-crash survivors making their way back to friendly lines.
- 0257-Mile Journey
- The route crosses jungle and paddy-field terrain where traps and enemy soldiers can appear.
- 03Mixed Gameplay Modes
- Map travel is interrupted by arcade shooting, close-quarters fighting, and other scene changes.
- 04Morale Threat
- A suspected unstable squad member must be identified before morale becomes a major problem.
