Our take on Sword of Fargoal
Rather than treating dungeon exploration as a steady campaign, the game combines randomized levels with a sudden escape deadline. Finding the sword shifts the objective from exploration to a 2000-second ascent, while permadeath makes each attempt a separate run.
What is Sword of Fargoal?
Sword of Fargoal is a remastered emulated roguelike originally released for the Commodore 64 in 1983.
A warrior explores randomly generated dungeon levels using grid-based movement, fights enemies, gathers loot and experience, and searches for the Sword of Fargoal. Items include healing potions and magic spells, while traps can crush the warrior, drop them into pits, or teleport them elsewhere. Gold can be offered at temples to gain experience. The sword is hidden between dungeon levels 15 and 20. After finding it, the warrior has 2000 seconds, or 33 minutes, to escape before the dungeon is destroyed. The enhanced version adds saving and loading, controller support, control remapping, and image scaling and smoothing options.
