Our take on Lamentum
Rather than presenting horror as a purely linear escape, Lamentum combines mansion exploration with limited carrying space, scarce ammunition, puzzles, traps, and decisions that alter the story. Its multiple endings make trust and resource choices part of the genre structure, not just combat survival.
What is Lamentum?
Lamentum is a pixel-art survival-horror game set in mid-nineteenth-century New England.
Victor Hartwell enters Grau Hill Mansion seeking a cure for his wife Alissa’s deadly illness, encountering creatures, traps, puzzles, lethal environments, and characters whose trustworthiness is uncertain. Exploration involves finding weapons, tools, restoratives, and hidden objects while managing a limited inventory. Firearms offer range but consume scarce ammunition, while melee weapons have different strengths and weaknesses. A lamp reveals dark areas, lock picks open sealed doors and chests, and item boxes store objects for later use. Decisions can alter the story and lead to different endings. Keyboard and mouse or a gamepad can be used on PC.
How Lamentum plays
- 01Limited inventory
- Item boxes provide storage in certain locations, while shortcuts allow quick access to selected weapons and potions.
- 02Melee and firearms
- Weapons differ in strengths and weaknesses, and ranged weapons consume ammunition that is scarce inside the mansion.
- 03Choice-based endings
- Decisions about whom Victor trusts can change the story and produce different conclusions.
- 04Mansion exploration
- The route includes hidden objects, sealed doors, chests, traps, dangerous environments, and puzzles.
- 05Creature encounters
- Nightmare creatures use different behaviors and attacks as threats throughout Grau Hill Mansion.
- 06Character diary
- Victor’s thoughts and annotations are recorded for consultation during the journey.
