Our take on Dead of Darkness
The protagonist’s mental state changes the experience of enemy encounters: as it falls, hallucinations become stronger and can blur what is real.
What is Dead of Darkness?
Set in England in 1985, the game follows private investigator Miles Windham to Velvet Island as he investigates the mysterious death of his daughter.
Strange behavior among the residents turns into hostility, and Miles must survive the island’s dangers. The 2D action-adventure combines exploration, puzzles, traps and encounters with grotesque creatures. Resources are scarce and inventory space is limited, so route choices matter. Enemies can be fought, avoided or outsmarted.
Encounters also affect Miles’s mental state: as it drops, hallucinations grow stronger and can blur reality and fiction. To investigate, search locations, examine items and read documents for clues that can reveal hidden caches or open secret passages. The story includes more than 15 characters, each connected to Velvet Island’s secrets.
How Dead of Darkness plays

- 03Clue-based investigation
- Examining objects and documents can uncover clues that expose hidden caches or secret routes.
- 04Multiple enemy responses
- The 13 enemy types can be fought, escaped or outsmarted.
- 05Island character stories
- More than 15 characters have stories tied to Velvet Island’s secrets.
