Our take on Astalon: Tears of the Earth
The retro presentation, tower secrets, and large room count receive strong emphasis, while the moment-to-moment structure also depends on combat, platforming, puzzles, and switching among three heroes.
What is Astalon: Tears of the Earth?
In a world nearing collapse, three explorers enter a sinister tower that has emerged from deep below the planet, hoping to rescue their village.
Players alternate between Arias, a fighter; Kyuli, a rogue; and Algus, a wizard, choosing each character’s distinct weapons and powers to defeat creatures, overcome massive bosses, solve puzzles, and ascend through the structure. Death does not end the expedition: reincarnation lets the heroes return, while bargains with Epimetheus, the Titan of Death, can improve the group and influence its destiny. Exploration includes hundreds of chambers, artifacts, hidden areas, unlockable content, and campfires that save progress and permit character changes. Pixel-based visuals, hero backstories, and a retro soundtrack containing more than 30 chiptune compositions complete the presentation.

Astalon: Tears of the Earth compared to similar games
Sundered: Eldritch Edition is also a metroidvania-style action game, but its description emphasizes chaotic progression, while Astalon centers on three switchable heroes, tower rooms, artifacts, campfires, and death-based advancement. Jusant focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, multiple routes, and a meditative ascent rather than Astalon’s combat, character switching, and bosses.
