StrategyIs X: Tension worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Space strategy fans who want trade and combat in the same campaign
- Players who prefer open-ended empire growth over a fixed storyline
- Simulation players interested in managing ships, stations, sectors, and goods
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a tightly scripted, linear campaign may find the open-ended structure less suitable
- Players wanting a focused single-ship experience may not fit the multi-ship progression
- Players looking for a small, self-contained map may find the 90-plus-sector universe too broad
Our take on X: Tension
Its defining structure is open-ended empire expansion: missions arrive during play while trading, station construction, ship acquisition, and combat determine how the campaign develops.
What is X: Tension?
X-Tension expands X: Beyond the Frontier with missions offered during play rather than a linear plot.
Players can buy and pilot fighters, small transports, captured Pirate ships, and, after the 2. 0 update, the larger TL-class freighter. The game’s universe includes over 40 additional sectors, bringing the total to more than 90 sectors for exploration, trade, and combat. New locations provide places to build stations and trade over 50 goods. Ships can be upgraded with dozens of wares supplied by five unique alien races. The Xenon are hostile opponents, while empire growth comes through a mix of commerce, station building, missions, ship acquisition, and space combat.
