Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking combat as the sole focus may hit a wall when trading, ship upgrades, and production management become necessary.
- Players wanting a short, linear experience may struggle with the broader sector-trading and empire-building structure.
- Players looking for turn-based battles with small military squads may prefer Xenonauts.
Our take on X: Beyond the Frontier
The bounce point comes when the escape story requires sustained economic management. Players uninterested in tracking goods, adapting to sector demand, upgrading ships, and constructing stations may hit a wall once production becomes part of the campaign.
What is X: Beyond the Frontier?
Play as Kyle Brennan, an experimental-ship pilot trapped in alien-inhabited sectors after his vessel malfunctions.
With no route home, he searches for a way back while helping uncover the ancestry of a hidden human-descended group and opposing the Terraformers, now called the Xenon. The game combines trading across over 50 sectors, dealing in more than 50 goods, and fitting ships with dozens of upgrades available from five races. Players can track hostile pirates, survive Xenon attacks, construct stations, and establish a production empire. Trading decisions must account for the needs of each sector's local economy. X: Beyond the Frontier is the first part of the X-Universe series.
