Maxwell after a hyperdrive malfunction sends him 35 years into the future and into a conflict with an alien armada. The game combines space combat with cargo trading, asteroid mining, exploration, diplomacy, and negotiations with other characters. Players can follow the main story, take individual missions, or travel through the galaxy in a sandbox mode. The game includes over 20 solar systems, 100 space stations, more than 30 customizable ships, and over 170 commodities. Missions include convoy escorts, criminal captures, alien rescues, cargo transport, mercenary assignments, and technology recovery. Players can manufacture new weapons and equipment, trade ore and supplies, and choose controls for mouse, keyboard, or gamepad.
