Our take on Thriller Garden
The flexible upgrade and modifier systems trade immediate simplicity for experimentation. Character strengths, weaknesses, task types, blessings, and curses all affect the choices available for a mission, adding decision-making between attempts.
What is Thriller Garden?
Fight through monster-filled locations while completing varied missions with a roster of characters, including a sheriff, athlete, yoga instructor, and Taoist priest.
Each character begins with a distinctive weapon and personal strengths and weaknesses. Completing missions unlocks additional characters and removes weapon restrictions for characters used in successful tasks. Defeated monsters drop experience that can be collected to offer enhancement choices. The game focuses on non-numerical upgrades whose effects depend on how they interact with one another. Completed missions grant blessings that can be selected before later attempts, while failed missions can still contribute permanent improvements shared across the roster. After unlocking every character, curses can raise mission difficulty by giving enemies selected resistances or other advantages.
How Thriller Garden plays
- 01Character-specific weapons
- Completing a task with a character can make that character’s starting weapon available to the rest of the roster.
- 02Non-numerical upgrades
- Experience gained from defeated monsters presents enhancements based on interactions between effects rather than only changing statistics.
- 03Permanent improvements
- Achievements linked to play patterns such as movement can strengthen every character, including after an unsuccessful mission.
- 04Selectable blessings
- Mission rewards and challenges can be applied before an attempt to alter the conditions for the chosen character and task.
- 05Enemy curses
- After the full character roster is unlocked, curses can increase difficulty by assigning selected resistances or other advantages to enemies.
