We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…

- Players who enjoy designing ships around different combat or exploration roles
- RPG players who want faction choices, research decisions, and crew development
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a tightly linear adventure may hit a wall when choosing where to explore among over 100 star systems.
- Players who prefer simple loadouts may bounce off the ship-building and technology research decisions.
- Players seeking a direct sequel to Starcom: Nexus may not find the expected continuation, since this is a new story.
Our take on Starcom: Unknown Space
The bounce point arrives at the ship and technology systems: players must choose layouts, weapons, defenses, crew upgrades, and hull options rather than relying on a fixed vessel. Those who prefer a narrow upgrade path may find that decision layer demanding before reaching the wider faction and exploration systems.
What is Starcom: Unknown Space?
Explore more than 100 star systems containing planets, artifacts, derelicts, anomalies, and other discoveries.
Investigate over 230 illustrated anomalies, follow more than 60 main and side missions, and uncover a story involving alien factions and an ancient threat. Build a starship by choosing layouts suited to exploration, fast attacks, or heavy armor, then share blueprints with other players. Research discoveries to earn Research Points and select modules, weapons, defenses, crew specializations, or hull upgrades through a technology tree. Trade with, hire, trust, or fight alien factions whose attitudes change in response to actions. The game also includes crew training, autopilot, fast-travel gateways, artifact collection and analysis, a searchable ship log, and saving outside combat.
