ActionIs ROOT worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Stealth FPS players who prefer careful movement and checking corners over relying on crouching for concealment.
- Shooters who want the option to switch between sneaking and attacking enemies directly.
- Players who enjoy tough end-of-level fights and can accept damage that cannot be recovered.
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who need a way to recover damage may hit a wall when injuries persist through the run.
- Those seeking a forgiving route to later levels may struggle when even small mistakes jeopardize progress.
- Players looking for a climbing puzzle, runner, or multiplayer shooting game will find a different type of experience here.
Our take on ROOT
The bounce point is taking damage: it cannot be recovered, and even a small mistake can threaten progress to the next level. Players who expect to reset their condition between encounters may hit that wall before reaching the end-of-level fights.
What is ROOT?
Play as hacker Edward Summerton as he breaks into a corporation’s network to gain ROOT access.
This first-person shooter allows either cautious movement through corridors or direct attacks against enemies. Damage cannot be recovered, and mistakes can put progress to the next level at risk. Hostile programs stand between Summerton and the Systems Administrator, who controls the network and its defenses. The game includes difficult fights at the ends of levels and environments with objects that can be moved, picked up, thrown, shot, or broken. Shooting uses a dot crosshair, and stealth depends on careful movement and checking corners. Dialogue from companion SHELL can be turned off in the options.
How ROOT plays
- 01Persistent Damage
- Damage stays with the player, so taking hits can jeopardize reaching the next level.
- 02Interactive Objects
- Objects in the environment can be moved, picked up, thrown, shot, or shattered.
- 03Optional Dialogue
- SHELL's dialogue can be disabled through the options menu.
