Rather than treating shooting and strategy as separate modes, Nuclear Dawn places infantry combat and real-time command within the same battle structure. The genre departure comes from making players alternate between fighting on the ground and directing squads, construction, research, and resources from above.

Nuclear Dawn combines first-person shooting with real-time strategy in one multiplayer battle model.
As a soldier, players cross post-apocalyptic versions of modern cities, choose from four classes per faction, and use load-outs covering more than three dozen weapons. Matches support 32 players and squad-based objectives. As commander, players organize squads, assign targets, manage resource routes, construct forward bases and defenses, research technologies, and use battlefield abilities. The Empire and Consortium follow different base-building approaches. The game includes six maps, 60 ranks, weapon unlocks, achievements, custom-map support through Steam Workshop, and play on Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX through Steamplay.
