Rather than ending a run with a standard victory screen, defeat can leave a card behind as a future opponent. Progress through the areas also feeds into a single-player-at-a-time king-of-the-hill contest, with a hidden final area as its last stage.
What is King of the Sandcastle?
King of the Sandcastle is an asynchronous multiplayer dungeon crawler built around turn-based battles and a king-of-the-hill contest.
Each run begins by choosing one card to take into the castle. Rooms may contain battles against cards belonging to players who previously died there; losing can leave the current card behind as a future enemy. Chests contain shells for acquiring cards and badges that add active or passive abilities. At the midpoint of each area, players can choose to descend into another area.
Defeating an area's boss makes the player's card its new boss. Becoming boss in every area apart from the first main area awards a key badge, which opens the route from The Hallway to the hidden Throne Room. One player can hold the title of king at a time. The game includes 22 cards, 24 badges or moves, and 6 areas.
