Our take on Ikaruga
The bounce point arrives when polarity switching becomes a constant defensive choice: absorbing matching bullets is useful, but the wrong polarity leaves the ship exposed. Score-focused players face another wall when maintaining three-enemy chains takes priority over simply surviving.
What is Ikaruga?
Ikaruga is a vertical shoot ’em up built around switching the ship between black and white polarity.
Enemy ships and bullets use the same two colors, and matching projectiles can be absorbed rather than damaging the ship. Stored energy powers homing lasers when released. Defeating three enemies of one polarity in sequence creates a chain bonus, adding a scoring and tactical layer. The game contains five levels with boss encounters, three difficulty settings, and Arcade and Prototype modes. Local play supports two players, while Double Play lets one controller operate both ships. Replay data can be saved or downloaded from leaderboards. The game also supports vertical screen display, rotated side-scrolling presentation, Xbox 360 controllers, keyboard, and mouse.
How Ikaruga plays

- 03Chain Scoring

- 04Local Multiplayer
- Two players can play locally, and Double Play supports controlling both ships with one controller.
- 05Five-Stage Structure

- 06Replay Data
- Runs can be saved, and replay data can be downloaded from the leaderboards.
