Our take on Ikai
Its defining constraint is a protagonist who cannot fight back, turning encounters with spirits into exercises in drawing seals, staying silent, or escaping.
What is Ikai?
Ikai is a first-person psychological horror game set around a feudal Shinto shrine and inspired by Japanese folklore.
The player controls Naoko, a shrine priestess who investigates a world overtaken by monsters, ghosts, spirits, and yokais. Exploration reveals her story while puzzles obstruct progress. Naoko cannot attack the creatures, so encounters focus on facing threats, staying quiet, or running away. Drawing protective seals is part of the interaction, with slow, deliberate movements used during tasks. The game’s structure combines shrine and forest exploration, supernatural encounters, puzzle solving, stealth, and escape sequences within a story about fear spreading from a nearby village.
How Ikai plays
- 01Protective seal drawing
- Players draw seals during strange sounds and supernatural events around the shrine.
- 02Defenseless protagonist
- Naoko has no attack option, making direct encounters depend on evasion rather than combat.
- 03Shrine exploration
- The setting includes a feudal Shinto shrine and surrounding areas where Naoko’s story unfolds.
- 04Stealth and escape
- Threats can be approached quietly or avoided by running when discovered.
