Our take on How We Die
Rather than treating uncertainty as a permanent constraint, the game makes probability a resource to reshape. Its deck-building structure is paired with dice-face modification and beliefs that alter mechanics, while the story turns a tabletop scenario into events in reality.
What is How We Die?
How We Die is a deck-building roguelike with a board-game and TRPG feel.
Hic and Illec complete a scenario that summons aliens, then discover that an invasion is happening in reality. Their game master, Is, disappears after leaving a message directing them to his home. To progress, players defeat enemies, collect tools, and use them to reach the next map and destination. Tools can be used repeatedly when their conditions are met, allowing combinations. Dice act as resources and action points; their face values can be strengthened or modified to change probabilities and create combinations. Character beliefs can also be added, with effects such as increasing the draw count.
How How We Die plays
- 01Tool-Based Progression
- Defeated enemies provide equipment used to advance toward the next map and destination.
- 02Conditional Tool Chains
- Items can be used repeatedly when their requirements are satisfied, allowing sequences built around combinations.
- 03Modifiable Dice
- Dice faces can be strengthened or changed while dice serve as both resources and action points.
- 04Character Beliefs
- Adding beliefs can affect mechanics such as the number of cards drawn.
