Our take on Gimmick! Special Edition
The Special Edition foregrounds its modern additions, but the central experience remains an old-school platformer. Rewind, saving, and quick load add convenience options without changing the underlying platforming challenge, particularly when Serious Mode disables those extras.
What is Gimmick! Special Edition?
Play as Yumetaro, a youkai who summons a star to navigate a physics-based platforming world.
The star can reach hidden areas, cross cliffs, and attack enemies through trick shots. The game includes time attack challenges, secret hunting, and Serious Mode, which disables quality-of-life features for a stricter challenge. This edition adds achievements, online leaderboards, save and quick-load functions, a rewind feature, a gallery of cartridges, artwork, and scanned manuals, plus a sound test. It is based on SUNSOFT’s NES platformer, originally released in Japan and Scandinavia. The Scandinavian release used the title “Mr. Gimmick. ”
