Is Empyreal worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Action RPG players who want timing-based combat with several weapon choices
- Build-focused players who enjoy changing equipment, abilities, and statistics
- Solo players who want variable level conditions alongside hand-built environments
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a short, fixed adventure may not want the layered builds, quests, and changing Cartogram conditions.
- Players who prefer simple combat may not enjoy attacks, deflects, parries, and abilities with timing effects.
- Players looking for direct cooperative multiplayer may not find the single-player structure suitable.
Our take on Empyreal
The store emphasis on trading and asynchronous contact may make Empyreal sound like a shared multiplayer adventure. Its stated structure is single-player, with other players primarily involved through item exchange and related asynchronous features.
What is Empyreal?
Empyreal is a single-player action RPG set on an unexplored planet containing a vast Monolith built by a lost civilization.
Choose the Glaive, Mace and Shield, or Cannon, each with its own core moveset, then fight automatons using attacks, deflects, parries, and abilities. Equipment, statistics, abilities, backgrounds, and character creation options support different builds. Cartograms change enemies, loot, available lives, resistance requirements, and other level conditions, while the levels are hand-built and include hidden routes and secrets. Expedition members have personal questlines with multiple outcomes. Each Cartogram includes a boss battle. Although the game is single-player, players can share and trade items through asynchronous features.
How Empyreal plays
- 01Three weapon paths
- The Glaive, Mace and Shield, and Cannon each have a distinct core moveset.
- 02Timed combat actions
- Attacks, deflects, parries, and precisely timed abilities affect encounters.
- 03Build customization
- Equipment, statistics, abilities, backgrounds, and character creation options shape each character.
- 04Variable Cartograms
- These artifacts change enemy groups, loot, available lives, resistance requirements, and other level conditions.
- 05Expedition questlines
- Members of the expedition have personal stories with multiple outcomes, including complete failure.
- 06Asynchronous item exchange
- A mail system, Trading Post, and item-gifting feature connect players within the single-player structure.
Empyreal compared to similar games
Empyreal combines timing-based combat, character builds, variable Cartograms, and boss encounters inside a Monolith. Ghost of a Tale is also described as an action RPG, but its emphasis is on stealth, disguises, conversations, immersion, and exploration in a medieval animal world.
