Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking forgiving progression may hit a wall when repeated deaths become part of learning the encounters.
- Players who prefer fast, low-management battles may bounce off action-point planning, deteriorating equipment, and companion panic.
- Players looking for a broad open-world RPG may find the campaign constrained to the 20 decks of one cruise liner.
Our take on Dread Nautical
The bounce point arrives when several pressures overlap: equipment wears down, supplies remain scarce, companions require rest, and panic can spread. Players who do not enjoy planning around action points while managing attrition may hit that wall before the ship’s full mystery unfolds.
What is Dread Nautical?
Dread Nautical is a tactical, turn-based RPG set aboard the cruise liner Hope after supernatural creatures overrun it.
Players choose from four heroes, battle monsters, and move across 20 decks while uncovering the ship’s mysteries. Each fight requires planning around characters’ action points. Weapons, medical supplies, and other items wear down, while available resources remain limited. Scattered survivors can be persuaded to join the group and fight alongside the heroes. Companions also need time to rest, or panic can take hold. The game presents survival as an ongoing pressure, with repeated deaths expected during attempts to escape the ship alive.
How Dread Nautical plays
- 01Turn-based combat
- Battles revolve around planning how each character spends action points.
- 02Ship exploration
- The campaign crosses 20 decks of the Hope while its mysteries are uncovered.
- 03Survivor recruitment
- Scattered people can be convinced to join the group and participate in fights.
- 04Degrading equipment
- Weapons, bandages, and other supplies deteriorate during the struggle.
- 05Companion fatigue
- Allies need rest because prolonged strain can lead to panic.
