Our take on Capes
The focus on coordinated squads and distinct hero abilities trades away a simpler pick-up-and-play structure. Progress depends on learning how characters work together, while mission objectives and challenges add extra demands beyond defeating opponents.
What is Capes?
Capes is a turn-based superhero strategy game set in a dystopian city controlled by supervillains.
Recruit heroes with distinct powers, train them, and deploy up to four in each mission. Campaign and patrol missions let the team advance the main story, investigate side content, unlock additional heroes, earn Skill Points, and complete challenges. Combat focuses on positioning, team-ups, enemy types, and each hero’s individual abilities rather than random numbers or taking cover. Heroes gain new abilities and upgrades as they level up, while objectives and hero-specific challenges provide more Skill Points. Optional missions reveal additional details about the heroes’ lives, and each character can use a personal Ultimate and unique team-up abilities.
How Capes plays
- 01Four-Hero Missions
- Each mission allows a squad of up to 4 heroes, with every hero gaining a distinct team-up ability from each ally.
- 02Campaign And Patrols
- The mission structure combines story chapters with patrol activities and optional missions.
- 03Hero Progression
- Leveling grants abilities and upgrades, while Skill Points from objectives and challenges unlock additional powers.
- 04Distinct Hero Styles
- Characters use different powers and abilities, requiring different tactical approaches in combat.
- 05Hero Challenges
- Character-specific challenge collections can award bonus Skill Points and open optional missions.
- 06Position-Based Combat
- Team composition, positioning, and coordinated abilities shape approaches to enemies and supervillains.
Capes compared to similar games
Capes centers on superhero squads of up to 4, hero-specific abilities, team-ups, and a campaign supported by patrol and optional missions. Men of War: Assault Squad focuses on large-scale World War II strategy with direct control over individual units, while Xenonauts uses small squads of persistent soldiers against an alien invasion. Shogun Showdown instead combines turn-based positioning with attack-tile upgrades, deck building, and roguelike progression.
