Map settings support small two-player conflicts or galaxies with 50 or more players and thousands of stars, with a map designer included. Diplomacy offers pacts, alliances, favors, demands, threats, and ultimatums. Research includes more than 100 technologies covering ships, defenses, biological warfare, and psychic abilities. Conflicts move into real-time 3D battles involving 100 or more ships per side, with marines able to attack ground defenses during fleet engagements. The game emphasizes warfare and strategy over economic micromanagement and is intended to finish within a reasonable time.
