Our take on Age of Wonders
A wide feature set is named, but its breadth can make the game’s moment-to-moment focus less clear. The experience spans empire management, exploration, diplomacy, role-playing, and several multiplayer formats rather than centering on one type of play.
What is Age of Wonders?
Age of Wonders is a turn-based fantasy strategy game combining empire building, exploration, tactical battles, and role-playing elements.
Choose among 12 fantasy races, recruit more than 50 heroes with abilities that can be upgraded, and use spells while exploring locations, dungeons, and open terrain. Armies can seize important positions, attack defended cities, and fight through encounters. Relations with compatible races can lead to alliances based on their different abilities. The single-player campaign supports alignment with either light or darkness. Multiplayer options include hotseat, play-by-email, LAN, and Internet games. LAN and Internet matches also support simultaneous turns. The setting follows a conflict among humans and older races after a previously peaceful age is disrupted.
