Our take on Millennia
Rather than keeping history on a fixed track, the game lets objectives redirect the campaign into alternate or crisis-driven ages. Its endgame also changes the usual victory structure by allowing a dominant nation to define the conditions others must contest.
What is Millennia?
Millennia is a turn-based 4X strategy game spanning 10,000 years, from humanity’s beginnings to possible futures.
Players guide a nation through ten ages, developing cities, researching scientific and cultural advances, and managing resources such as food, wealth, and production. Regions can specialize, while surplus goods can be transported to colonies or military forces. Objectives may shift the world into Variant Ages with different rules, technologies, and units, while disorder can trigger Crisis Ages shaped by war, sickness, or ignorance. Nations also adopt distinct cultural identities through Nations Spirits. Near the end of a game, a dominant nation can establish the conditions for a Victory Age, prompting other nations to pursue their own victory or oppose its attempt.
How Millennia plays
- 01Alternate Historical Ages
- Objectives can lead to Variant Ages that introduce different rules, technologies, and military units.
- 02Crisis Age Outcomes
- A path marked by disorder can produce futures affected by war, sickness, or ignorance.
- 03Nation Customization
- Nations develop through selectable Spirits that shape identities such as warrior, explorer, monument builder, or financial power.
- 04Regional Production
- Regions can convert basic materials into goods including weapons, tools, paper, lumber, coins, and jewelry.
- 05Victory Age
- A leading nation can set the conditions for the final contest while other nations decide whether to race toward victory or resist.
Millennia compared to similar games
Old World also focuses on leading a historical empire, but its description emphasizes multiple generations, political marriages, heirs, and leaders. Millennia instead centers on ten ages, resource conversion, alternate timelines, crisis outcomes, and player-defined Victory Ages.
