RPGIs Wayward worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Roguelike players who want survival systems and grid-based, turn-based play
- Sandbox explorers who prefer open-ended skill growth over classes and levels
- Multiplayer groups who want optional player-versus-player play
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a fixed, authored world may find the procedurally generated islands a poor fit.
- Players who prefer simple character progression may hit a wall with skill and stat growth tied to interactions with items and objects.
- Players looking for a short campaign may find the stated 35+ hours before end-game too long.
Our take on Wayward
Players who expect familiar class and level choices may hit the first wall when character growth is tied to actions with items and objects. The next friction point is resource and inventory management within a turn-based survival loop, where exploration and crafting are central rather than optional side systems.
What is Wayward?
Wayward is a turn-based, top-down wilderness survival roguelike focused on exploration, simulation, and discovery.
Players gather and use items, build, and develop skills and stats through interactions rather than classes or levels. The world is procedurally generated across five island types, with more than 750 items and over 30 skills. Players can encounter more than 60 creatures and animals, and choose hardcore, casual, challenge, or custom modes. Permadeath is optional, and play can be turn-based, real-time, or simulated turn-based in multiplayer. The game also includes online multiplayer with optional player-versus-player play, character customization, modding, and Steam Workshop support.
